Microsoft today announced the public release of Windows 10 IoT Core (the tiny version of Windows designed for sensor-laden Internet-connected devices) for two types of maker-friendly hardware: the Raspberry Pi 2 and the MinnowBoard Max.
The preview for the OS, which is now available for free, first came out in late April, at Microsoft’s Build developer conference. Since then, Microsoft has bolstered it with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, as well as improved GPIO performance on the Raspberry Pi 2, wrote Steve Teixeira, director of program Management for the Internet of Things team in Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group, in a blog post today.
Windows 10 IoT Core is one of seven versions of Windows 10, alongside Home, Mobile, and Education, among others.
In order to use this version of Windows for the Internet of Things (IoT), you’ll need a separate computer running the July 29 release of Windows 10, also known as build 10240, as well as Visual Studio 2015.
As for the kinds of devices that can boot this new version of Windows, Microsoft is pointing to a Remote Arduino, a weather station, and my personal favorite, arobot.
