Dota 2 team wins $6.6 million at The International 5

The International 5 (TI5), Dota 2’s most prestigious and financed tournament, came to a close over the weekend. Evil Geniuses claimed the title and $6.6 million in prize money.

The North American team overcame Chinese team CDEC 3-1 in the best-of-five final. CDEC will have to console themselves with around $2.8 million for their second place finish.

Evil Geniuses and CDEC had faced each other before the final. The two met in the upper bracket final on day four with the North American team being sent to the lower bracket to face another Chinese team, LGD.

While many had written Evil Geniuses off, they surprised LGD and took the series 2-0, setting up a rematch against CDEC in the final. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The International 5 featured a prize pool of more than $18 million, thanks mainly to the community and their investments in Compendiums.

Despite TI5’s success, Valve has big changes planned for competitive Dota 2. It has announced that four major championships will be held, culminating in The International in the summer. The biggest change will see the introduction of limited roster trade periods in a bid to increase team stability.
