Electronic Arts Need For Speed Reboot To Benefit From Year Off, Says Producer

Electronic Arts’ (NASDAQ:EA) Need for Speed series were once known to be one of the biggest racing franchises in gaming, but the last few outings have suffered from burnout. Promising titles such as "Need for Speed: The Run" and "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" were at most average experiences. Although, Criterion’s "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit" crossed the finish line, and the most recent "Need for Speed: Rivals" was a fairly decent spiritual successor.

Unfortunately, EA’s attempt to do a Call of Duty-style multiple sub-franchises failed, as gamers got confused between a simulation such as NFS Shift or an arcade racer like NFS Underground. This was acknowledged by Ghost Games executive producer Marcus Nilsson in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine saying: “Taking the year off is obviously an answer to that, right? We used it to figure out who we are and what we should be. Was it confusing to have Need for Speed: The Run [six months after having] Shift 2? Absolutely. It is – not only does it saturate Need for Speed, but it also confuses you, ‘What is the experience I get from Need for Speed?’ So, this reboot of the franchise is about getting our foundation correctly laid out – what you see here is what the Need for Speed experience will be for the foreseeable future.”

In related news, the new Need for Speed may very likely require an online connection for single player and we at Bidness Etc have reached out to EA for a clarification in that regard. Hopefully, the series doesn’t confuse the gamers and a year off has done the franchise well. We could very well get more information at the upcoming Gamescom.

Need for Speed is releasing on Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox One, Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)PlayStation 4 and PC on November 3.
