Microsoft Gamescom 2015: ‘Rise Of The Tomb Raider’ Gameplay Trailer Breakdown

(Photo : Facebook/Rise of the Tomb Raider) Crystal Dynamics was present during Microsoft's Gamescom 2015 press conference to show off a new gameplay demo for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

One of the more impressive showings at this year's Microsoft Gamescom press conference was a new gameplay trailer of "Rise of the Tomb Raider" from developer Crystal Dynamics. The trailer shows off several new aspects that separate the game from its predecessor, including combat tweaks and a refined progression system.

The trailer kicks off with protagonist Lara Croft taking in a sprawling view of the Thermal Valley, one of many different regions players will get to explore. The panning shot quickly zooms down to a more intimate fireside look at the game's upgrades and progression system. Lara will have access to three different skill trees: Brawler, Hunter and Survivor. Each of these trees will house dozens of skills that allow Lara to earn XP bonuses for performing certain actions as well as gaining new abilities and attacks.

Next up is the real meat of the trailer: a stealth encounter against the armed militia known as Trinity. Using what Crystal Dynamics has labeled the Guerilla Combat system, Lara has several deadly new techniques she can employ, including water-based takedowns, death-from-above aerial assassinations and a special attack that allows her to shoot two enemies at once with her trusty bow.

The trailer does a good job of highlighting the many different approaches players can take. Those who don't want to leave a pile of bodies in their wake can throw environmental objects to distract guards and simply sneak around. Those who have no qualms about killing can simply whip out a shotgun or assault rifle and go to work. The increased focus on killing may rub some fans the wrong way (the first game was supposed to be about Lara coming to terms with her need to kill after all), but at least there will also be options for non-violent players.

The trailer also shows off some new tools like poison arrows, and it closes out by teasing a new enemy type: a more advanced Trinity soldier wielding a flame thrower. Chances are good that taking him out will require a few well-placed gun shots (or arrows) to his fuel tank.

"Rise of the Tomb Raider" will be released for Xbox One on November 10. After a period of Xbox exclusivity, it will also eventually be released for PC and PS4. You can watch the full gameplay trailer below (courtesy of GamesHQMedia).
