Mozilla CEO attacks Microsoft for ‘very disturbing’ Windows 10 browser feature
Beard also posted a video, showing the additional clicks. That will launch the Settings app, opened to the “Choose default apps” tab. It’s not though clear why Microsoft changed the behaviour in Windows 10, but did say that it reduces some of the unwanted noise that multiple prompts bring.
Microsoft released a statement in response saying, “We designed Windows 10 to provide a simple upgrade experience for users and a cohesive experience following the upgrade”.
The Internet Explorer replacement Microsoft Edge is one of the headline features of Windows10.
Chinese users have been slow to adopt newer version of Windows. The CEO noted that technically it is still feasible to preserve users’ browser settings, but argues the changes in the default setting makes it harder. While the teams concedes that Microsoft Edge beats Firefox’s security and roughly draws level with Chrome’s, the new web browser also introduces newsecurity problems and threat vectors.
Just close the window and you are done.
Windows 10 has generally gone down very well amongst consumers, and we think it’s far superior to Windows 8. Personally speaking however, it’s pretty hard to see what all the fuss is about… Outside of slightly altering the process for choosing the default browser, Microsoft is doing what it’s done for many years.
Barbara Chaparro, director of the Software Usability Research Laboratory at Wichita State University, told us she hasn’t yet had a chance to install or explore Windows 10. The EU approved the plan in December 2009, and Microsoft began rolling it out in early 2010.
Over the past 10 months, more than five million people signed up to receive the Windows 10Technical Preview.
“The upgrade now be purposefully designed to throw away the choices its customers have made about the Internet experience they want…On the user choice benchmark, Microsoft’sWindows 10 falls woefully short, even when compared to its own past versions”.
The multi-platform Windows 10 can be also be used across PCs, smartphones, tablets, games consoles and wearables, which could encourage developers to design more programmes for it. “Unfortunately, it didn’t result in any meaningful progress, hence this letter”.
Beard has a point, especially since a small tweak like this could wipe out Mozilla Firefox from alot of systems.
“These changes aren’t unsettling to us because we’re the organization that makes Firefox,” he writes.
The company, in an effort for cross promoting their Microsoft brand on other operating systems has been launching various applications which are quite useful.
So rather than using this for sending notes from meetings, it’s more about imparting key facts or asking quick questions such as “I’m running 10 minutes late” or “Where is the meeting being held?”
Responding to the situation, Microsoft said they are willing make the changes based on feedback from users.
Microsoft deliberately limited consumer choice to give itself an unfair advantage, Beard suggested.
