Lifetime PS4 Sales Cross 25 Million, Double Xbox Sales Last Quarter
Sony reported another 3 million PlayStation 4 sales during the first financial quarter of the year. That’s up from 2.7 million in the same time period last year.
The quarter ending June 30th brought total lifetime sales of the video game console to 25.3 million. It took the PlayStation 2 two years and eight months to hit 20 million sales. The PS4 hasn’t even hit the two-year mark yet.
Sony now predicts it will sell 16.5 million PS4 units during this financial year, up from 14.8 million last year, bringing the total to just under 40 million.
This makes the PlayStation business one of Sony’s most lucrative. The division brought in $160 million in operating income out of $2.365 billion in sales. Sony as a whole saw $676 million in net income from sales of $15 billion.
Microsoft reported a total of 1.4 million Xbox One and 360 combined sales during the same period, less than half of Sony’s PS4 sales.
Still, Microsoft saw an increase of 27 percent over the same period last year, which may be attributable to the console’s falling price and improving public image.
