Microsoft Xbox Live Down For Many Users

Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox Live was down for many users recently, as reported by gamers on social media and community forums. Microsoft confirmed the problem earlier yesterday, and admitted that the online component of Xbox was not functioning properly.

The problem started around 9 AM Pacific time on Thursday, when some users reported difficulty in signing in to Xbox Live. The problem then escalated, as users in North America as well as the United Kingdom reported they were not able to sign in to Xbox Live and game servers. Players of Activision Blizzard Inc.’s (NASDAQ:ATVI) Destiny and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare suffered the most, as they were not able to connect to the games’ respective servers.

There has not been any news regarding the main cause of the issue, although there are rumors that the downtime is most likely connected to the mass downtime that happened Sunday evening, causing an Xbox Live outage that spanned the whole day.

This recent issue affected Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox apps on PC, coincidentally on the same day of Microsoft’s launch of its much-hyped Windows 10. There was another mass DDOS attack back in 2014, which resulted in a downtime spanning several days. That specific attack was launched by the Lizard Squad, which confirmed the attack via its Twitter page.

Although rumors abound, no hacker group has claimed responsibility for this downtime as of yet. Microsoft responded to the problem and updated its status page in due time. This was surprising since the status page is largely unreliable and usually does not reflect the present issues faced by the service. The company’s support team also responded on the official Twitter account, saying the team was investigating the issue. Later on, Microsoft announced that Xbox Live is back up and running, and users should be able to log in without any issue.

This month, both Microsoft and Sony Corp.’s (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) online services have faced several downtimes randomly. If we count correctly, it is the third time Xbox Live has experienced a downtime, while Sony’s PlayStation Network has been down a total of five times this month, if you include the downtime faced by PlayStation Network yesterday at around the same time as Xbox Live.
