Captain America Civil War: Predicting Who Lives And Who Dies

Marvel Studios

Conjuring the image of war with a title basically makes death an inevitability. And there can’t be a full-fledged superhero war without at least someone falling. Captain America: Civil War needs raised stakes, and people need to die for the threat to feel serious.

That being said, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been relatively bloodless to date. Even when some of its major characters have apparently met their end, we’ve seen them resurrected or revealed to actually be alive. And while it is gratifying to see those beloved characters escape Death’s clutches, it cheapens the impact of all subsequent ‘deaths’.

Captain America, however, operates somewhat at odds with the rest of the MCU. With The First Avenger being a war movie and The Winter Soldier being a political thriller, death suited each film and was a natural element of their worlds. Likewise, any deaths in Civil War, a modern war epic, would certainly feel as if they belong. Given the source material it is based upon, death is also an important narrative device.

The MCU has expanded to gargantuan proportions and is almost over-stuffed with superheroes and villains at this point, but even then, the prospect of killing off one or more of these famous characters would still be startling. Which is precisely why Marvel need to do it: but who could bite the dust?
