Online gameplay for the PlayStation 4 is about to get more expensive - at least, if you prefer not to pay for your PS Plus subscription in one annual lump sum. Sony is putting up its monthly and quarterly subscription prices for players in the UK, with prices rising by as much as 25%.
Effective from September 1, a monthly subscription to the PS Plus will rise from £5.49 to £5.99. The biggest increase hits the three-month pass, which will increase from £11.99 per month to £14.99, according to Engadget, a hike of 25%. The price of the annual subscription will remain unchanged at £39.99.

In a statement, Sony says the price increases are "in line with market conditions" - by which it means it has matched the price of Microsoft's Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. Sony's statement adds that it "will continue to invest in PlayStation Plus to ensure an unparalleled experience, featuring the best quality games and features".
PlayStation Plus gives console owners access to online multiplayer games and a selection of free games downloads. The current selection includes dark puzzler Limbo and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. Microsoft also offers online gameplay and free downloads to Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
Both PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live have been dogged by outages in recent months. Both suffered from a high profile denial-of-service attack last Christmas, which wiped out both networks over the festive holidays.
