Wu Haijun, the CEO of Chinese PC manufacturer Hasee, has inadvertently revealed the existence of a high-end GeForce GTX 990M mobile GPU, and Nvidia aren’t too happy about it. The CEO let slip its existence during a conference presentation, without getting the go ahead from Nvidia.
The chip itself looks to be an immensely powerful mobile GPU, with performance above and beyond even the desktop GeForce GTX 980. The built-in GPU is expected to launch in Q4 of this year. Going by the codename ‘N16E-GXX’, the GTX 990M is based on the full Maxwell GM204 architecture seen in the GTX 980.
Due to power concerns, the GeForce GTX 990M will only be available in laptops built from the ground up to support to it, with the GPU soldered straight onto the motherboard. The TDP will vary between 100 and 185W from maker to maker, depending on cooling needs.
Haijun claimed the performance is roughly equal to a pair of GeForce GTX 980M GPUs in a SLI configuration, so you’re looking at a dedicated laptop graphics card pitched somewhere between a desktop GTX 980 and a Titan X.
In terms of the capabilities for portable gaming it’s pretty mind blowing - this is proper high-end desktop performance in a laptop. Obviously this comes with a caveat, and that’s the price. No figure’s been given yet, but this will surely come at a significant premium, possibly as much as double the cost of a GTX 980M. For gamers splashing out on a laptop, this does however give you some glorious future-proofing.
Could you be tempted into picking up a laptop with a monster of a graphics card like this? Or does the lack of upgrade options put you off? Let us know!
