Sony unveils its upcoming mobile projector for the PlayStation 4 at a media event
Rumor that Sony Corp. (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) would release a new mobile projector has turned out to be correct. Recently at a media event, Sony revealed its upcoming mobile projector for the PlayStation 4. Bidness Etc takes a look at the features of the device.
Sony’s new mobile projector will use laser technology. This means that the image will always be bright and crisp. The device can be used on any surface, and the image will always be in focus, without you having to make any adjustments, since it has auto focus and free focus modes. The HD mobile projector will run at 1920x720 resolution, which is satisfactory for casual viewing every now and then. The device can project all of your content from your mobile or PS4, wherever you want.
It connects wirelessly to your devices, and also features an HDMI slot which can be used to stream content. With that said, it likely also streams content from other devices which have HDMI output, so it’s not limited to the PS4 only. It is portable and lightweight, weighing around 7oz.
The projector has a brightness rating of 32 lumens, with a contrast ratio of 80000:1. An external speaker has been added for audio output, but most of us will use headphones for a better audio experience, which is why Sony has added a headphone jack too.
Moving on to image size and battery life; at a distance of four feet, the image will be 40 inches in size. At eight feet, it will project an 80 inch image, and at 12 feet, it will give a 120 inch image. The device uses a 3000mAh Li-Ion Polymer battery with gel technology, but Sony has not given out details on how long this will last. In addition, you can also charge your mobile phone from this device.
Now that Sony has entered the HD projector market, we just have to wait and see how successful the move turns out to be for the company. The release date and price have not been revealed by Sony yet, but several other sources claim the device will be released in October 2015 with a price tag of $350, and Amazon will sell it. Is this Sony’s answer to Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One’s ability to stream content on Windows 10 devices? It remains to be seen.
