Much of Square Enix's focus is naturally on its upcoming release "Rise of the Tomb Raider," but a recent Gamescom quote from the publisher could mean that the upcoming sequel won't be the final game in the rebooted series.
In a recent Gamescom interview with GameSpot, Square Enix Americas CEO Phil Rogers spoke candidly about all of the criticism surrounding the publisher's one-year exclusivity deal with Microsoft, stating the following:
"We believe first and foremost this is the right thing to do with Tomb Raider right now. What it's done for the sake of the studio and the next beat with the Tomb Raider trilogy... But the backlash is--we've watched carefully and we believe it's the right thing to do."
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" will only be the second game in the rebooted series, following 2013's "Tomb Raider." If Rogers' quote is indeed accurate, that means that Square Enix has at least one more Tomb Raider game planned after "Rise of the Tomb Raider." When asked to comment on Rogers' statement, PR representatives for Square Enix took an unsurprisingly coy stance:
"We're always thinking about the future of the franchise, but right now we're focused on the upcoming release of Rise of the Tomb Raider."
Later on in the interview, Rogers admitted that releasing "Rise of the Tomb Raider" as an Xbox timed exclusive was a tough decision to make, because the publisher knew it would upset PlayStation and PC players in the short term. If additional Tomb Raider games were to come after "Rise of the Tomb Raider," there are no guarantees that they would also be timed console exclusives.
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" is set to launch on November 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. It will be released for PC in early 2016 and then for PS3 and PS4 in late 2016.
