"Deus Ex" was one of those games which had a one-minded approach to boss fights—bash their heads in and hope for the best. Many players agreed, to the point that even director Patrick Fortier had to agree as well.
Now, they're looking at a step-up from "Human Revolution's" one-track boss fights. With the arrival of "Mankind Divided," according to IGN, "Deus Ex" is putting the choice of whether to fight or talk it out to the player. When asked about this, Fortier said, "It's all about supporting all the different play aspects."
There are different kinds of players, and some will prefer stealth and guile over trying to prove which one of the characters are stronger. While might is right, Fortier explains that each style of play has been taken into account. Players can "stealth" bosses; others can take the hand-to-hand combat approach, while there are a select few who might appreciate a different way of approaching the situation.
It seems that games are becoming a little bit pacifist, in "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," at least. Bosses don't always have to die in this game, unlike in "Human Revolution" where the bosses are almost always killed off during the cut scenes. The developers, however, rectified that mistake in the DLC, and in "Mankind Divided" they placed that option in altogether.
It makes for a very intriguing and intelligent game play altogether. There have been other games where people don't always have to kill off bosses.
"Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor's" Nemesis system supports this game play to a degree, whereas "Fallout 4," a game coming out in November, has a system that supports pacifist game play in place. It appears that an intelligent approach to overcoming opponents is the current wave in games today and these three games have placed the options back in the hands of the fans.
"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" will be arriving on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2016.
