Facebook finds no one uses lol anymore

Typing “lol” is no longer the right way to show that you’re laughing at something…or cracked a grin if you were really being honest.

Facebook conducted a study to find how people laugh on the internet. It took the posts of its users and organised them into four categories - “haha”, “hehe”, “lol” and “emoji”.

The site found that just 1.9% of users wrote “lol,” while a whopping 51.4% used “haha” or some variant. Emoji was the second biggest way of communicating a laugh with 33.7%, while “hehe” managed to stake a 13.1% claim.

The study also found that younger users tended to use Emoji more, while older Facebook users are still clinging to using lol.

For the purpose of this study, Facebook only used posts and comments rather than Messenger. It said that people might write differently in private chats.
