Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) To Focus More On First Party Exclusives For The Xbox One

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) had one of the best E3 conferences in recent history at E3 2015, with fans and critics loving what Microsoft had put up.

Phil Spender, Division Head for Xbox, made a brief appearance at the press conference and made big announcements for the Xbox One including the upcoming Backward Compatibility with Xbox 360, which will allow gamers to play old Xbox 360 titles they own on the Xbox One, via software emulation. Also showed off at E3 were new titles for the year 2015, including high profile ones such as Square Enix’s (OTCMKTS:SQNXF) Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the ever popular Halo 5 Guardians.

However, come Gamescom 2015, the upcoming conference which is happening in a few days, Microsoft will have a different kind of show for its European fans as the company previously let it be known that it was going to introduce several upcoming Xbox One games, such as ScaleBound, Quantum Break, Crackdown and more.

With just a few days to go for Gamescom 2015, Phil Spencer talked about the long term strategy he had in mind for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. In an interview with GamesCore at the ChinaJoy 2015 Digital Entertainment Expo, Phil Spencer said that his strategy this time around was to focus more on first party titles and exclusives, and not work on any third party exclusives or exclusivity contracts. He said that although he wanted to have good relations with third party developers, he was not willing to spend much on getting exclusive third party contracts, but rather, wanted to invest that money in further first party franchises and new first party IPs for the long term.

He added that although it was great to have The Rise of the Tomb Raider as a timed exclusive for the Xbox One this year, investing in first party titles was the core to Xbox’s strategy, and that fans should expect more of that in a few days at Gamescom 2015. He said that Xbox had Halo 5, Gears of War, Forza 6 and Fable shipping this year, which was the best line-up from its first party franchises, and he planned to build further on it.

This strategy is the opposite of Microsoft’s strategy from the previous generation, as back in the time of the Xbox 360, it was all about third party exclusives and timed exclusive contracts with third party developers. This time it looks like it is all about first party titles and exclusives for the Xbox One from here on.
